Old Field Garden
Planted in the southeast corner of an old farm field, this naturalistic style garden was designed and installed in 2024. The site began as a weedy, abandoned field behind a beautiful 1880s barn. To prepare the site, primary attention had to be given to the suppression of weeds and weed seeds. Very dense planting in large blocks made identifying and removing emerging weed seedlings much easier, while the garden established itself. Plants were chosen for their ability to fill in quickly and stay competitive against some quite aggressive weeds, for their ability to attract and feed wildlife, as well as for their seasonal interest and beauty. This site is in full sun, and the existing clay soil can have a tendency to dry and crack in the heat and drought of summer, so this garden needs to work hard. We chose a palette of plants specifically adapted to thrive and look their best in these conditions.
