A Front Pathway Garden
Originally a weedy field in front of a newly built house, this diverse and vibrant garden and entry walkway was designed to bring people from a parking area, down a slope, and into the home through a naturalistic meadow. Using natural stone for garden walls and cut stone for stairs, a soft pea gravel pathway, and a plant palette selected to create a relaxing experience, this garden was originally designed and installed in 2017. We edited the garden in 2023 to remove a few trees and plant more grasses and shrubs for greater textural interest. Some interesting highlights include rare Japanese trees such as Styrax japonicus ‘Evening Light’, hardy gingers, dramatic, native Actaea racemosa, masses of butterfly, bee, and hummingbird favourites, and fall bloomers like Kirengeshoma palmata.
